A well-stocked first-aid kit is a necessity in every home. It is suggested that you keep one first-aid kit in your home and one in each car. Make sure you have one on family vacations.
Choose a container that is roomy, durable, easy to carry and simple to open. A tackle box or art supply container is perfect.
Include these items:
- first-aid manual
- sterile gauze (also include eye patch gauze)
- adhesive tape
- adhesive bandages in several sizes and shapes (knuckle, butterfly, etc)
- elastic bandage
- antiseptic wipes
- antibiotic cream (triple-antibiotic ointment)
- hydrogen peroxide
- hydrocortisone cream (1%)
- acetaminophen and ibuprofen
- tweezers
- scissors
- safety pins
- disposable instant cold packs (or zip lock bags for ice)
- calamine lotion
- ethyl alcohol
- thermometer
- plastic gloves (2 pairs at least)
- flashlight and extra batteries
- mouthpiece for CPR (get from Red Cross)
- your list of emergency phone numbers
- blanket
Read the manual entirely. Store out of children's reach but readily accessible by adults. Check regularly and replace used items or items out of date.
